Picture unspoiled landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic backdrops that will leave you absolutely speechless.

Whether you’re up for a peaceful escape, eager for some outdoor adventures, or simply want to soak in nature’s raw beauty, the beaches here have something magical for everyone. Trust me, once you set foot on these sands, you’ll never want to leave.

So, here’s my personal roundup of the top 10 beaches in this remote and enchanting paradise. If you’re looking for more things to see and do in the Outer Hebrides, I’d recommend picking-up my my Outer Hebrides Road Trip guidebook, it also features all of the locations listed below!

Outer Hebrides Top 10 Beaches:

1. West Beach, Berneray

West Beach on Berneray feels like a slice of the Caribbean—three miles of pristine white sand and stunning turquoise waters that could easily fool you into thinking you’ve flown to the tropics. In fact, back in 2009, the Thailand Tourism Board mistakenly used a photo of this beach to promote one of theirs!

Despite being named the 3rd best beach in Europe by Lonely Planet in 2019, West Beach remains wonderfully quiet. It’s perfect for a peaceful stroll, soaking in the spectacular views of Harris, or catching a breathtaking sunset. There’s a small car park nearby, and a trail leads you right down to this hidden gem.

There are two types of tours: the landing tour, where you can explore Skellig Michael, and the eco tour, which sails around the islands. Prices range from £50 to £140. Parking in Portmagee is limited, so I’d suggest arriving at least 30 minutes before your boat tour.

2. Luskentyre, North Harris

Luskentyre Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the Outer Hebrides and for good reason. This vast expanse of white sand, framed by rolling dunes and the rugged mountains of Harris, is simply awe-inspiring. The colours here are particularly striking, with the emerald-green waters creating a stark contrast against the pale sands. It’s a photographer’s dream and a haven for beachcombers and nature lovers.

3. Traigh a’ Bhaigh, Barra

If you’re ever on the island of Barra, make sure to visit Traigh a’ Bhaigh, also known as Vatersay Beach. This crescent of white sand, stretching between the islands of Vatersay and Barra, is nothing short of spectacular. It’s no wonder this beach is thought to be the most photographed in Scotland—especially with the iconic ‘Vatersay beach gate’ view that captures the essence of this serene spot.

To find this picture-perfect location, just walk down from the café at the northern end of the beach toward Vatersay village. As you stroll, you’ll see the famous view on the left-hand side of the road. The northern part of the beach, with its soft white sand, is particularly popular for a refreshing dip in the calm, clear waters.

But what truly sets Traigh a’ Bhaigh apart is the tranquillity it offers. At sunset, when the sky transforms into shades of pink and orange, the beach becomes even more magical. Whether you’re here for a swim, a peaceful walk, or just to soak in the breathtaking scenery, Traigh a’ Bhaigh is a must-visit gem on Barra.

4. Reef Beach & Cliff Beach, Lewis

Tucked away and often quiet, Cliff Beach is a hidden gem perfect for those looking to enjoy wild waves and fresh sea air without the crowds. While not ideal for swimming or paddling, it’s a favourite spot for surfers and walkers. The beach is surrounded by some of the tallest cliffs on Lewis, offering fantastic walking trails with breathtaking views.

You can park at the end of the single-track road, where an honesty box suggests a £5 fee for overnight stays—a small price for witnessing the stunning sunsets here. If you’re up for a scenic drive, the seven-mile Reef Loop is a rewarding route that passes Cliff Beach and the charming village of Valtos before reaching the stunning Reef Beach. With its white sand and turquoise waters, Reef Beach feels like a slice of the Caribbean, complete with small dunes and rocky outcrops. The campsite behind the beach is one of the best in Scotland, welcoming tents, campers, motorhomes, and caravans.

5. Garry Beach, Lewis

Garry Beach is one of those places that instantly steals your heart. Nestled on the east coast of Lewis, this beach has it all, golden sands, clear blue waters, and those incredible Lewisian Gneiss Sea Stacks that make for a perfect photo opportunity. Trust me, you’ll want to dip your toes in the chilly water.

But that’s not all, Garry Beach is also the starting point for the Tolsta Heritage Trail, a stunning 10-mile coastal walk with views that will blow you away. Even getting here is an adventure, with a drive that feels like you’re heading to the edge of the world (though, yes, you’ll have to double back afterward). Also, if you’re in the area, make sure to check out nearby Traigh Mhor—it’s just as jaw-dropping. Garry Beach is the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret, and once you’ve been, you’ll never forget it.

6. Huisinis Beach, Harris

Huisinis Beach is a remote and stunningly beautiful spot on the Isle of Harris. Nestled at the end of a long, winding road, this beach offers incredible views of the nearby island of Scarp and the surrounding mountains. The golden sands and clear blue waters make it a great spot for swimming, although the water can be a bit chilly! You might also be able to spot some otters! The isolation of Huisinis makes it a perfect getaway for those looking to escape the crowds.

7. Seilebost Beach, Harris

Seilebost Beach, located just down the road from Luskentyre, is another jewel in the Harris crown. This beach offers a more intimate setting, with stunning views across to the island of Taransay. The mix of white sand and vivid green machair (grassy plains) creates a beautiful contrast, and at low tide, the sand stretches for miles. Seilebost is perfect for a peaceful day out, surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the Hebrides.

8. Traigh Eais

If you’re in Barra, don’t miss Traigh Eais, a stunning beach right next to the famed Traigh Mhor. Facing the mighty Atlantic, it’s a magnet for surfers who come from all over for the epic waves. Watching these waves crash in is nothing short of mesmerising. And those towering sand dunes? They’re some of the highest in Britain and definitely worth a climb. I suggest parking at the beach car park near Barra Airport and taking a short walk over the machair to reach Traigh Eais. It’s an adventure that perfectly combines natural beauty with the thrill of the ocean.

9. Traigh Shiar

Just a stone’s throw from Traigh a’ Bhaigh, Traigh Shiar is a bit wilder and a lot quieter. The winds and waves here make for a more rugged landscape, which means it’s not the best spot for swimming. But if you’re looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a more serene setting, this is your beach. Plus, you can visit the Annie Jane Monument while you’re here.

10. Kildonan Beach

Facing out to the Atlantic, the long stretch of sand known as Kildonan Beach offers fantastic sunset viewing and plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities! The white sand runs just shy of a couple miles, with its parallel machair home to plenty of wildflowers, including rare orchids. Kildonan Beach is part of the huge 20-mile long beach that runs along the entire west coast of South Uist (that’s a lot of beach to explore). Keep your eyes peeled for otters and seals among the rockpools sunning themselves!
