Dovedale Stepping Stones & Thorpe Cloud Circular
What3Words: ///warnings.unscrew.twitching
Parking: ///hoops.continues.shortage
This walk is set in the heart of the White Peak, famed for its limestone valleys. You’ll enjoy a gentle riverside stroll, taking in the iconic stepping stones across the River Dove. This is one of the best Peak District walks for families. After that, you can climb to the summit of Thorpe Cloud for stunning views over the dale. I’ve built so many fond memories here over the years! From the National Trust car park, the path to the stepping stones is mostly level gravel and tarmac, making it ideal for a short, scenic outing. However, if you head up Thorpe Cloud, be prepared for steep stretches, uneven ground and a bit of a scramble near the top. The views are incredible! Remember to bring some change for the toilets in the car park. Members of the National Trust can park for free.

Kinder Scout
What3Words: ///settle.buildings.infects
Parking: ///kitchen.complains. shelving
Kinder Scout is undoubtedly one of the best Peak District walks, It is one I’ve done a fair few times, although it is quite a challenging hike! The moorland plateau stands more than 2,000ft above sea level, offering stunning views that will take your breath away on a clear day.
It’s roughly an 8-mile hike if you start from Edale and head to Kinder Scout via the Pennine Way and Jacob’s Ladder, an old packhorse track. You’ll need appropriate clothing and footwear, and be prepared as the terrain is steep and rocky in places. Keep dogs on a lead. Did you know about Kinder Scout’s fascinating history? In 1932, it was the site of the Mass Trespass, when ramblers campaigned for open access to Britain’s moorland. Basically, it has played a key part in opening up the countryside to everyone who loves the great outdoors! Take extra care in winter or poor visibility, as some sections of this route can be challenging.
TRAIL DIFFICULTY: Hard
DURATION: 4-4.5hr
ELEVATION: 527m
DISTANCE: 13km
Mam Tor
What3Words location: ///salary.protrude.pencils
Parking: ///yummy.officials.finders
One of my favourite places in the Peaks! Mam Tor, meaning ‘Mother Hill’, is one of the area’s best-loved landmarks. Despite being nicknamed the Shivering Mountain due to its history of landslides, it’s actually classed as a hill – albeit a pretty big one at 517 metres tall. It even bears the remains of an Iron Age hillfort, built around 1200 BC. The views from the top on a clear day are exceptional! Depending on your start point, it takes about an hour to reach the summit. For a relatively easy climb, park at the National Trust car park – and don’t forget your camera (sunrises are especially good). Dogs are welcome but keep them on a lead.
TRAIL DIFFICULTY: Moderate
DURATION: 1.5-2 hr
ELEVATION: 517m
DISTANCE: 4.8km
Bamford Edge
What3Words location: ///cutaway.snack.daredevil
Parking: ///heartless.hiker.spirit
There aren’t many better viewpoints than Bamford Edge. This is the place where most people fall head over heels for the Peak District, I certainly did! Bamford Edge is an impressive gritstone crag overlooking Ladybower Reservoir. You may be able to park in a lay-by but spaces are limited. However, if you choose to park at the Heatherdene car park, which has toilets, you can follow the trail through a picturesque woodland area. After that, you will make your ascent to the viewing point. The views from the top are spectacular. This is definitely one of the most delightful Peak District walks!
DIFFICULTY: Moderate
DURATION: 2-2.5hr
ELEVATION: 310m
DISTANCE: 5km
Chee Dale Stepping Stones Circular
What3Words location: ///nation.chatters.flagged
Parking: ///general.indoors.drizzly
The final hike in my list of top 5 Peak District walks is in the western area of this magnificent National Park. This route will take you through the Chee Dale Gorge, a deep, picturesque gorge in the Upper Wye Valley. You’ll go over the stepping stones at the River Wye, and then return via the Monsal Trail (pop to the tea room at Blackwell Mill if you fancy a cuppa). As you wander through the protected nature reserve you’ll see a huge variety of wildflowers and trees. It’s probably not a good idea to tackle this trail if it’s been raining a lot, as the stones may become flooded when the water level is high. Note that the route also includes narrow and rocky paths and overhanging cliffs, so take care and dress appropriately. Sturdy boots are a must!
TRAIL DIFFICULTY: Moderate
DURATION: 1-1.5hr
ELEVATION: 170m
DISTANCE: 4.2km
