SWC300: The Only 5 Day Itinerary You'll Need👇🏻
Stop wasting hours trying to plan your SWC300 trip. In this blog, I’m sharing the ultimate 5 day SWC300 itinerary. It’s been tried and tested.
I’ve driven every mile of the route whilst researching and writing my brand-new SWC300 guidebook. I’ve visited more than 100 locations, tested multiple route options and spent countless hours figuring out what is genuinely worth your time and what isn’t.
I’ll show you exactly where I’d go, where I’d stay and the must-see locations I’d prioritise if I only had five days to experience one of the UK’s most underrated road trips.
Now, before we get started, a quick disclaimer. This is a fairly fast-paced SWC300 itinerary designed to help you see as much as possible in five days. If you’ve got seven days or more available, I’d absolutely recommend slowing things down and spending longer in some of these locations.
Let’s hit the road.

Our adventure begins in Dumfries, the largest town on the route. It’s the perfect place to stock up on supplies before heading west.
The first stop is Caerlaverock Castle. It’s one of Scotland’s most unique castles. Surrounded by a moat and featuring a rare triangular design, it’s a pretty spectacular introduction to the route.
From there, head towards the Solway Coast and make your way to Southerness Beach and Lighthouse. This is where you’ll start to appreciate one of the SWC300’s biggest strengths: space. Huge skies, vast stretches of coastline and very few people. On a clear day, you can even see across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District.
Next up is Sandyhills Beach. It’s another beautiful stretch of coastline and one of my favourite beaches on the route. If the weather plays ball, it’s the perfect place for a wander or even a picnic.
Before reaching your overnight stop, I’d recommend exploring Dalbeattie Forest. The woodland trails here provide a nice contrast to the coastal scenery you’ve enjoyed earlier in the day.
You’ll finish the evening in Kirkcudbright, one of the prettiest harbour towns anywhere on the route. Colourful buildings, independent shops, excellent seafood and plenty of character make it a fantastic place to spend your first night.
Overnight: Silvercraigs Campsite
Drive Time: Approx. 1 Hour 40 Minutes

Day 2 – Galloway Forest Park & Wildlife
Day two showcases some of the very best scenery on the entire SWC300.
Start the morning at Threave Castle before heading to the Red Kite Feeding Station near Laurieston. Watching dozens of these magnificent birds of prey soaring overhead is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences on the route.
From there, we’re heading into what I genuinely believe is the jewel in the SWC300’s crown: Galloway Forest Park.
Your first stop is Raiders Road Forest Drive. This gravel road winds through ancient woodland, alongside peaceful lochs and through scenery that honestly feels more like the Highlands than southern Scotland. It’s one of my favourite drives on the entire route.
Next up are the Red Deer Range and Wild Goat Park, where you’ll hopefully get the chance to spot some of the area’s most iconic wildlife.
Then finish the day at Grey Mare’s Tail. The waterfall itself is spectacular and the surrounding scenery is equally impressive.
Before heading to your campsite, I’d also recommend a wander around Newton Stewart and perhaps a visit to Galloway Distillery if time allows.
Overnight: Creebridge Caravan Park or Drumroamin Farm
Drive Time: Approx. 1 Hour 30 Minutes

Now, quickly, before we move on to day three…
If you’re currently planning your own SWC300 adventure, this SWC300 itinerary is actually one of several featured in my brand-new Southwest Coastal 300 guidebook.
The book contains over 100 locations, multiple itineraries, campsites, hotels, QR codes, what3words references and loads of practical travel advice I’ve gathered whilst researching the route. The goal was simple: save you hours of planning and help you experience the very best of the SWC300.
Anyway, back to the trip.
Day 3 – The Rhins of Galloway
Today is all about dramatic coastline and some of the route’s most iconic landmarks.
Start the morning in Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town. Even if you’re not a huge reader, it’s a lovely place to explore.
From there, head south towards St Ninian’s Chapel and Cave before continuing to Back Bay, one of the most peaceful beaches on the entire route.
Next comes one of the biggest highlights of the SWC300. The Mull of Galloway Lighthouse. This is Scotland’s most southerly point and one of those places that genuinely feels special. On a clear day, you can see Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and even the distant hills of Cumbria.
After exploring the lighthouse and surrounding cliffs, continue north via Port Logan and Ardwell Bay. Your final destination is Portpatrick.
Now, if there’s one thing I absolutely recommend here, it’s the cliff walk over to Dunskey Castle. This ended up being one of my favourite experiences on the entire road trip. The walk itself is beautiful, with incredible sea views the whole way before revealing one of Scotland’s most dramatically positioned castle ruins. If you can time it for sunset, even better.
Overnight: Castle Bay Holiday & Residential Park
Drive Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Day 4 – Highland Cows, Castles & Coastline
Day four begins in Stranraer before heading to one of the most unexpectedly enjoyable experiences on the route. Kitchen Coos and Ewes. Before arriving, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from a Highland cow safari. But honestly, it was brilliant. You’ll jump aboard a tractor trailer before heading out into the fields to meet Highland cows up close. It’s wholesome, authentic and completely different from anything else you’ll experience on the route.
From there, continue north towards Girvan Beach before stopping at Dalquharran Castle.
Then comes one of the biggest highlights of the entire SWC300. Culzean Castle. For me, this is one of the most impressive places anywhere in Scotland. Dramatically perched above the coastline and surrounded by stunning gardens and woodland, it’s the sort of place that makes you stop and say “wow”.
After exploring Culzean, make your way to nearby Dunure Castle before finishing the day in Ayr.
Overnight: Ayr Craigie Gardens Club Campsite
Drive Time: Approx. 2 Hours 30 Minutes

Day 5 – The Grand Finale
The final day proves that the SWC300 saves some surprises until the very end.
Start with Dalcairney Falls before heading to one of the strangest places I’ve visited anywhere in Scotland. Crawick Multiverse. Part landscape art installation, part science-fiction film set, part “what on earth am I looking at?” It’s completely unique and unlike anything else on the route.
From there, drive through the spectacular Mennock Pass. This road completely caught me off guard. Rolling hills, winding roads and huge open landscapes make it feel like a cross between the Peak District and the Scottish Highlands.
Next, arrive in Wanlockhead, Scotland’s highest village. Grab a coffee, explore the Lead Mining Museum and enjoy one final taste of rural south west Scotland.
The final stop of the trip is Drumlanrig Castle. And honestly, it’s the perfect way to end the journey. After days spent exploring ruined castles, wild coastline and remote forests, arriving at this magnificent red sandstone estate feels like a fitting finale. The grounds are beautiful, the castle is enormous, and it’s a great place to reflect on everything you’ve experienced over the previous five days.
Overnight: Moffat Club Site
Drive Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Final Thoughts on This SWC300 Itinerary
So there you have it. My tried-and-tested five-day SWC300 itinerary.
Is five days enough? Absolutely. But if I’m being completely honest, seven days would be even better.
The biggest thing that surprised me about the SWC300 wasn’t any individual attraction. It was just how consistently good the entire route was. The scenery, the wildlife, the beaches, the castles, the forest drives, the lack of crowds. Everything simply exceeded my expectations.
And perhaps most importantly, it still feels authentic. It feels like the sort of Scotland many people drive straight past on their way to somewhere else.
If you’re looking for an unforgettable UK road trip, I genuinely think the Southwest Coastal 300 deserves a place near the very top of your bucket list. And if you need a little extra help, don’t forget to check out my brand new SWC300 guidebook.
