Avoid These Common Mistakes to Make Your NC500 Adventure Unforgettable...
I’ve been lucky enough to explore the NC500 a few times, and along the way, I’ve picked up some valuable lessons. To help first-timers, and those planning an NC500 adventure, I’ve put together my top 7 mistakes to avoid.
7 Mistakes to Avoid on the NC500:
1. Don’t use postcodes for navigation.
I get it, we all rely on our phones for navigation these days. But here’s the thing, postcodes in the remote highlands of Scotland aren’t always as reliable as you might hope. So, if you’re trying to navigate through the Highlands, I’d recommend using what three words locations and downloading google maps offline if signal is poor. Trust me, you don’t want to end up driving in circles or worse, getting stuck on a narrow, single-track road!
2. Don’t do it last minute in the Summer.
Just a popping a plug here because my NC500 guidebook will really help you out if you’re planning this a little last minute!
3. Don’t do the route clockwise.
A classic debate: clockwise or anticlockwise. From personal experience, I highly recommend going anticlockwise. So, you might be thinking why head North East to begin your trip? Well, there’s a few reasons. Firstly, the roads are much easier. This allows you to adjust to the roads and ease yourself into the Scottish Highlands.
Secondly and more importantly the scenery will just continue to get more breath-taking as you weave your way to the epic Northern and Western Coast. Lastly, if you’re thinking of purchasing my NC500 guidebook it’s written in an anti-clockwise order, making it much easier to follow!
4. Don’t park in passing places along the route.
Now, I get it as someone who loves a good photo opportunity, those stunning views and perfect spots to snap photos along the route are hard to resist. But don’t make the mistake of pulling over in passing places to park. These spaces are there for cars to pass each other safely on the narrow roads, and if you park in them, it can lead to traffic chaos. So, stick to designated parking areas or laybys. Everyone will appreciate it, especially the locals!
5. Don’t rush plan for at least 5 days.
There’s so much to see when exploring the NC500 and the last thing you want to do is rush around and miss locations. The beauty of this trip is in the little detours and stopping to explore must-see attractions that you’ll miss if you’re speeding through. This gives you plenty of time to relax on the stunning beaches, venture on a hike, enjoy local activities, and, most importantly, take it all in at your own pace.
6. Don’t attempt Drumbeg or Bealach Na Ba pass in a large motorhome.
I’ve seen a few brave souls try to take on the NC500 in big motorhomes, but there are some roads you really need to think twice about if you’re driving something bulky. Drumbeg and Bealach na Ba, in particular, are scenic but very narrow and winding roads. If you’re in a large motorhome, you might quickly find yourself struggling to get through the tight turns or encountering some anxious moments. Stick to a smaller vehicle, and you’ll be much better off. Plus, it’ll make those scenic views a lot easier to enjoy.
7. Don’t go without a plan.
Some of us are all about the laid-back, no stress vibe, and it’s your holiday so I get it shouldn’t be frantic. But honestly, you’ll need a rough plan for this trip. There are so many incredible spots along the route from beaches, to castles and hidden waterfalls that you don’t want to miss out on.
Whilst you don’t need to plan every second, but having a general idea of what you want to see will help you make the most of your time. Trust me, you’ll be so glad you planned ahead when you stumble upon a jaw-dropping view you would’ve missed otherwise.
